What is SEO and Why It’s Important

Whether a marketing student or a business owner, it is important to get proper SEO training before launching a website or creating content. Many people have heard of SEO, but not everyone knows exactly what it is.Defining SEO

SEO is an acronym that stands for “search engine optimization.” That looks almost esoteric to those who are new to conducting business online or doing Internet marketing. It is really quite simple. Search engines send out “spiders” to index websites. Once a website is a part of a search engine’s index, it starts showing up in search results for various search terms.

Those search terms are “keywords” when used in the content of a website. When a keyword consists of more than one word, it is sometimes called a “keyphrase” or a “long-tail keyword.” These longer keywords are starting to become more popular due to the search habits of users. Keywords should reflect what the content on a page is about.

In fact, with search engine algorithm updates, it is vital that those keywords relate directly to the content. If they don’t, search engines figure it out fast and can remove a website from the index. Today’s SEO is defined as keywords relevant to a site’s content. Without that relevancy, the SEO renders itself useless in terms of increasing quality page hits.

What is SEOWhy SEO is Important

By not thinking through SEO best practices at the beginning of your campaign, you can cause some serious problems from the start. Not considering natural search can be detrimental to any website, which is why search engine optimization is becoming an imperative part of Internet marketing. There are ways to teach yourself, and there are also online SEO training classes that you can take, in order to get started.

One thing worth considering is your on-page optimization. Putting your keywords in content section headers, meta tags, and even in image and video descriptions, so that search engines know immediately what the page is about. The “strong” and “bold” tags within the text around the keywords can sometimes help with rankings as well. Again, if the keywords have nothing to do with what the page is actually about, they will eventually catch on and your result will be removed from the results.Without implementing SEO best practices, your traffic acquisition will likely be very slow and come haphazardly. However, as you learn how this works (it’s actually really easy!), you’ll see rankings going up up up!

  1. It’s important for companies to study the techniques of effective search engine optimisation. However, it’s fair to say that busy ecommerce businesses often don’t have the time to do it themselves (especially keeping up with Google’s algorithm updates). Sometimes it’s best to let someone with expert SEO knowledge to take care of this particular area.
