Are you currently unemployed? Stuck in a rut at work? Wish you had the perfect job? Well I’m here to give you some helpful advice on how to find your dream job.
With the on-going economic crisis, many fully-qualified people, especially the under 25’s, are currently unemployed, or struggling to find any job at all, let alone their dream job. So how do you go about finding it?
First of all, you need to have a clear idea of what it is you’re looking for. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses, your hobbies, any qualifications and any other work experience you have.
This will more than likely give you an indication of the industry you’d perhaps find the most enjoyable or relevant to your training.
What job do you want?
Think carefully about whether you’d prefer an office job, or a job where you’ll be working outside. Do you want to travel or be based in one place? Are you happy to do shift work, or do you prefer the idea of a Monday to Friday job? Are you looking for full-time work, or perhaps you require a part-time job, something which is more flexible? Once you’ve narrowed this down, you’ll have even more of an idea about which types of job will suit you.
Lastly, you’ll need to think carefully about how far you’re willing to go to get your dream job. You’ll probably be pretty sure by now of what it is you want to do. Now comes the hard part; the job search. If you’re really interested in agricultural work, for example, but you live in the hustle and bustle of a city, you’ll probably have to relocate to the countryside. Or perhaps you have a flair for languages? Would you enjoy working abroad?
What most people don’t realise when they’re looking for work is just how many things you have to consider. If you’re able to relocate, it can sometimes make your life easier. However, the majority of us will have commitments where we’re currently based, rendering the thought of moving impossible.
Work hard on your CV
Whatever your situation, your dream job doesn’t have to remain just that; you’re already halfway to achieving it just by knowing exactly what it is you want to do. All that’s left to do is to get applying. Remember to tailor your CV specifically to the job market, and always write a professional sounding cover letter, detailing exactly why you want the job and what you have to offer the company.
It’s the little touches that count; find out the name of the person you’re sending it to (usually the HR manager). Remember the rule – if you know the addressee’s name, end the letter with Yours Sincerely. If you address your letter to Sir/Madam, the correct closure is Yours Faithfully. Let your enthusiasm for the company and the job role shine through in your writing and it’s very likely that you’ll be offered an interview.
When attending an interview it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to get there. Blundering in five minutes late, flustered and sweaty-faced will not make a good first impression. Though I’m sure you don’t need us to tell you that! Prepare yourself beforehand for any questions you’re likely to be asked, and try to come up with some examples for each answer you give, even if it’s just I played for my University’s football team; that shows you can be a team player.
Be as natural as possible and smile if you’re nervous. Don’t rush your answers, and try to inject a bit of your personality in there, rather than uttering the same robotic phrases that you think will sound good to an interviewer. Chances are, they’ve heard everyone else say exactly the same thing. Don’t be afraid to stand out. Finally, remember to dress smartly, make eye contact and shake your interviewer’s hand at the beginning and end of the interview.
If you do all of the above, there’s no reason for your chosen company to not offer you the job. Unless of course your dream job is to be a professional skydiver and you have an acute case of vertigo!
